BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVES WARDLINE APARTMENTS DEMOLITION
HAMMOND -- The University of Louisiana System Board of Trustees today
unanimously approved the demolition of Wardline Apartments, the married student housing
complex at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Board of Trustees student representative Carlton Downey and board member Andre
Coudrain, a Hammond attorney who represents Southeastern's region, met with Wardline
Apartments residents prior to today's meeting.
"I would like to commend the Southeastern administration for going beyond the call of
duty in this matter," said Downey. "I know it was a tough decision for the university, but I
support this decision."
In a related matter, the Board also gave approval for the Southeastern administration to
provide a discount to Wardline residents of one-half off their last two months rent.
Southeastern notified Wardline Apartments residents earlier this month of the university's
intention to close the apartments in August. As a result of an informational meeting, students
asked for and received concessions regarding rent reduction and assistance in finding off-campus
housing.
"This has been a difficult decision," said Southeastern President Sally Clausen.
"However, the University felt it was important to work with the students regarding their
transition period. I am happy the board has allowed us to take action that will make the transition
a little easier."
