SOUTHEASTERN'S DANCEWORKS TO PRESENT "THE WATER MAIDEN"
HAMMOND -- Grace Elizabeth Latino of Metairie will dance the title role of "The
Water Maiden," an original modern ballet by Danceworks, Southeastern Louisiana University's
resident dance company.
"The Water Maiden" will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 28-29, at Vonnie Borden
Theatre.
The story ballet was choreographed by four Danceworks members, Jennifer Buck of
Harvey, Alison Maraman of Reserve, Carolyn Fulton of Reserve and Lesley Kernan of
Prairieville with artistic direction by Southeastern dance professor Martie Fellom. Southeastern
alumnus S. Alan Marsh wrote the script for the story ballet and costumes were designed by
Denise Ellender of Abit springs, Artie Fellom Brown of Hammond and choreographers Buck and
Maraman.
The choreographers's story tells in modern dance movement the legend of the water
nymph. According to legend, nymphs are mortal, but can continue to live by acquiring a new
soul
every 300 years. Without a new soul, they die and become the foam on the water.
The Water Maiden has reached the crucial three-century turning point and, venturing
from the water, meets a handsome man with whom she falls in love. Tragically, it is her love's
soul that is destined to become hers, but the Water Maiden chooses to save his life instead.
Arthur B. Simon of Hammond will portray the Water Maiden's earthly love. The dance's
cast also includes the four choreographers, Artie Fellom Brown, Jessica Burke of Mandeville,
Michele Cudd of Hammond, Tamara K. Pearson of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Laura Read of
Belle Chase, Debbie Rodriguez of Harvey, Zephyr Domnick-Swensen of Abita Springs, Carre
