SLU WIND SYMPHONY TO
PERFORM
IN SLIDELL
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana
University’s Wind Symphony will perform a broad selection of works
in a special concert on April 10 to benefit band programs at
Slidell, Salmen, and Northshore High Schools.
The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Slidell
High School Auditorium. Admission is $10.
Conducted by Glen J. Hemberger and guest conductor
Timothy Schneider from Northshore High School, the Wind Symphony will perform pieces such
as “Gandalf, The Wizard” from
Johan de Meij’s symphony "The Lord of the Rings" and “Simple Gifts:
Four Shaker Songs” by Frank Ticheli. Southeastern associate professor of
trumpet Bryan W. DePoy be featured as soloist in “Concertino for
Trumpet” by Frank Erickson.
Also on the program are
“Festive Overture, Op. 96" by Dmitri Shostakovich, “Cloudburst” by
Eric Whitacre, “Clowns” by Philip Parker; and “Prestissimo Galop” by Karl
L. King.
Hemberger said that in recent
years, the Southeastern Wind Symphony “has distinguished itself as a creative,
musical leader in its field, comprising of the finest woodwind, brass,
and percussion musicians at the university. The Wind Symphony is a highly
select ensemble, boasting players from music programs throughout the region
and across the country.”
Prior to joining the Southeastern
faculty as director of bands, Hemberger served in various other musical
capacities at schools and universities around the country, including Oklahoma
State University, University of Rhode Island, and Thornton High School
in Colorado.
Since receiving his bachelor’s
and master’s degrees at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a doctorate
from the University of North Texas, he has conducted performances and presented
seminars and workshops in nearly two dozen states and on four continents.
A Getzen performing artist, DePoy
has performed with symphonies throughout the country, including New Mexico,
Tennessee, and Mississippi. He received his bachelor's degree from the
Indiana University School of Music, master's degree from the University
of New Mexico, and doctoral degree from Florida State University. In addition
to being an active soloist and clinician, DePoy has published music articles
and is currently the editor of Music Reviews for the “International Trumpet
Guild Journal.”
