PROMINENT SPEAKERS COME TO SLU FOR WOMEN'S HER-STORY MONTH
     HAMMOND -- ESPN and ABC Sportscaster Robin Roberts headlines a list of
prominent women in diverse fields who will join Southeastern Louisiana University in
celebrating March as "Women's Her-Story Month."
     The celebration, which will include day and evening lecture series and a special art
exhibit, is the brainchild of students in English professor Carole McAllister's "Women's
Literature" (English 429/527) course. Evening lectures will be held at 7 p.m. each Tuesday in the
Student Union Theatre, while presentations during the day are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday
at Sims Memorial Library. All events are free and open to campus and community.
     Roberts, a 1983 Southeastern graduate and standout forward on Southeastern's Lady
Lions basketball team, will discuss her career as a broadcast journalist at the Pottle Music
Building at 7 p.m. on Friday March 2. While a Southeastern student, Roberts worked as sports
director at Hammond's WFPR/WHMD radio. Following graduation, she began her career in
television journalism in Mississippi, moved on to ESPN in Atlanta, and then to New York where
she contracts with both ESPN and ABC Wide World of Sports.
     Other evening guest speakers include Rep. Diane Winston of Covington, March 6;
Louisiana State University forensic anthropologist Mary Manhein, March 13; New Orleans
author Patty Freidmann, March 20, and Pam Olano of the Neill Corporation, March 27.
     Loyola University journalism professor Sherry Lee Alexander will present the first day
lecture, "Women in Journalism," on March 1. Also on the schedule are four Southeastern
