Appendix 3 to Annual EEO Public File Report Form covering the period from February 1, 2008 to and including January 31, 2009.
73.2080(2)(v) Establishment of an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment.
Description of Initiative:
KSLU once again saw students from Mandeville High School who were interested in working in the radio industry participate in an internship with KSLU. The internship enabled the students to experience first-hand the demands and benefits of working in the radio industry. The program also served as a recruiting tool in an effort to have the interns enroll at Southeastern Louisiana University upon graduation and work at KSLU during their college career. The participants completed the radio station’s training manual which explains the day-to-day radio station operations and the expectations of the on-air staff. The program also taught the interns FCC rules and regulations and gave them hands-on experience in on-air performance, digital audio editing and news and sports reporting.
73.2080(2)(vii) Participate in scholarship programs designed to assist students interested in pursuing a career in broadcasting.
The KSLU radio scholarship program continued to offer a $500 scholarship to undergraduate students at Southeastern Louisiana University studying communication. The scholarship application stipulates that:
- The student must be a current KSLU student worker.
- The student must have a 2.50 or higher cumulative GPA.
- The student must be enrolled as a full time student.
- The student must demonstrate a strong work ethic and must be active in University and/or community service activities.
- To be considered for the scholarship, the student must submit three letters of recommendation from Southeastern faculty members
- The student is eligible to receive this scholarship one time only.
Clayton Cutrer received the scholarship for the 2008 school year.
73.2080(2)(viii) Establish a training program designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher-level positions.
Description of Initiative:
General Manager Todd Delaney developed a training manual showing trainees how to add music and other audio files to the Selector and Linker scheduling programs and export that information to create a playlist in the audio automation system. The manual shows a user how to create card information for all of the audio that is added to the playback system through Selector and Linker. It then shows how to generate a playlist from the cuts in the database and export that playlist to the ENCO automation system. Finally, the manual shows how to “ingest” the playlist into the ENCO system and ensure audio plays at the scheduled times. This is one of the skills required by the KSLU program director – a position which was filled in early May of 2008. The position was vacant since 2004. A KSLU worker could use this training manual to develop the skills necessary to be hired as the program director if that position were to become vacant again.
73.2080(2)(x) Participate in at least four (4) events or programs relating to career opportunities in broadcasting sponsored by educational institutions.
Description of Initiative:
General Manager Todd Delaney spoke with his introduction to radio production class at Southeastern Louisiana University about the importance of having a wide and diverse radio skill set when it comes time to look for a job in the industry. He stressed the importance of knowing programming philosophy, developing digital editing skills and the ability to meet any and all deadlines. He also recommended that students secure an internship with a commercial broadcast entity before they graduate from the university.
Music Director Adelita Gomez once again attended the annual Senior Day event at Southeastern Louisiana University. She handed out KSLU job applications along with bumper stickers and t-shirts to students interested in working at KSLU. Several individuals completed the job application and submitted it to the radio station. Gomez spoke to the students about what to expect from working in radio and what traits a good worker should have.
General Manager Todd Delaney gave his annual speech to Southeastern Louisiana University’s chapter of the National Broadcasting Society. He discussed the job opportunities that new media have created such as internet advertising and the online voice over industry. He also stressed the importance of securing an internship during one’s college career to build one’s skills and resume and get a foot in the door before graduating from college.
Specialty show host Clayton Cutrer attended the annual Junior Day event at Southeastern Louisiana University. The event allows students in their junior year of high school to experience college life first hand. The program showcased on-campus organizations and the jobs that they offer students who enroll at Southeastern Louisiana University. Cutrer talked to students about the skills they’d need to develop to become a radio show host. He also mentioned the importance of getting any and all the experience they can as early as possible.
