Southeastern Louisiana University's famed Jazz Ensemble 1 will
present its spring concert on Monday, April 28th, at 7:30 pm in the
Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts. Jazz Ensemble 1 is led by
Glen J. Hemberger, and is a twenty piece ensemble comprised of the
most outstanding jazz musicians attending Southeastern.
Jazz Ensemble 1 has burst onto the Louisiana jazz scene with its bold
programming and fresh approach to the jazz idiom. Styles range from
big band swing to contemporary jazz; and from rock to
Latin. Featured on the program will be "Norwegian Wood" originally
composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, "Don't Let the Sun Go
Down on Me" by Elton John, the Lerner and Loewe classic "On the
Street Where You Live," and the chart made famous by trumpeter
Maynard Ferguson, "MacArthur Park." The ensemble will introduce its
new vocalist, Iuliia Alyeksyeyeva, performing "Smoke Gets in Your
Eyes." Also on the program will be senior music major David White on
flugelhorn performing a classic ballad by Southeastern alumnus Bobby
Campo titled "For Donna."
The concert will be held in the Columbia Theatre for the Performing
Arts, 220 East Thomas Street in downtown Hammond. Admission is $4.00
general admission seating. All students with ID, regardless of age,
are admitted free of charge. Doors to the Columbia Theatre will open
at 7:00 pm. For further information, contact the Southeastern band
department at 985-549-2599.
