"Tenacious Killers" Of Kappa Nu
College days swiftly pass, imbued with mem'ries fond. And the recollection slowly fades away. Our renowned A Phi A and dear fraternal bond, May they ever abide and with us stay. (Bro. Abram L. Simpson)
Brief History
Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded on March 22, 1975 by Brothers Gregory V. Hicks and Michael Riley at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) in Hammond, Louisiana.
Bros. Hicks and Riley found themselves in a situation similar to the one our illustrious Jewels found themselves in at Cornell University in 1906. They were minorities at a predominately white institution and there were no organizations other than athletics that catered to the needs of African American people. Believing that the young men of Southeastern would benefit from the Greek experience and an organization that would foster positive ideals about manhood, they petitioned for a chapter to be started at Southeastern.
At a meeting of the Epsilon Upsilon, Brother Kevin Riley introduced the motion to authorize the Dean of Pledges to begin the process to chartering a chapter of Alpha at SLU. An amendment was made to add Nichols State University to the motion, both passed unanimously, and the pledge process began under the watchful eye of the chapter president, Bro. Larry Charles.
A joint charter banquet was held at the Saxony, in New Orleans, near Canal and Claiborne where then Southwestern Regional Vice President George Thompson was the guest speaker. It is interesting to note that the first available names for the new chapters were Kappa Kappa and Kappa Mu. It was requested that the names Kappa Mu and Kappa Nu be given to forever remind us that the two chapters were Twins, chartered on the same night at the same place.
Since that fateful day in 1975, Kappa Nu Chapter has striven to be not just another organization, but to be in the forefront of those things that affect the lives of African American students attending Southeastern.
