Instructors (Selected Southeastern Music Majors)
A Southeastern faculty member or professional music educator coordinates each performance and academic area. Coordinators provide studio instruction and oversee daily instruction provided by Southeastern Department of Music and Dramatic Arts music majors. Several of these music majors also teach year-round at the Southeastern Community Music School, which sponsors this festival.
Festival Office
During the Festival, students and parents will be able to reach an administrator at 985-549-5659 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The office will be located in the Pottle Music Annex Room A160. Any student who is required to leave or return to the festival after morning role call and before dinner must sign in and/or out at this office.
Performance Scholarships
We are again offering a special incentive to area high school students (grades 9-12). Students who wish to be considered for a financial award should send in a recording of their playing (tape or CD), with their SMF application. Last year we were able to provide assistance to no fewer than fifteen deserving participants; we hope that at least as many students take advantage of this opportunity at this year's festival.
Supervision and Daily Schedule
Festival participants will benefit from an intensive musical experience, while being provided ample recreational and social time. Each area coordinator will be responsible for their students from 8:00 a.m. until lunch. During this time, students will participate in large ensemble and chamber ensemble rehearsals; attend studio lessons, masterclasses, and wide variety of enjoyable musical activities. All festival staff members join students for lunch and dinner at a university cafeteria.
Ensembles
The SMF Concert Band rehearses daily in preparation for the Festival's closing concert, as does the SMF String Ensemble. All Participants will be members of the SMF Choir, which also performs on the Festival's closing concert program. Repertoire offers participants an invigorating learning experience and audience members an exciting and varied program.
Chamber Music
All students participate in the Festival's chamber music program. Assignments are made by faculty at the beginning of the festival. Each chamber ensemble rehearses daily. Members of the Southeastern faculty coach many of the rehearsals. Chamber ensembles are often invited to perform in evening recitals.
Private Study
As part of the core curriculum, each participant receives daily instruction from a member of the SMF Faculty. The one-on-one work with an individual teacher throughout the festival allows participants to make rapid progress in solving technical problems and learning new repertoire. Teacher assignments are made at the beginning of the Festival.
Performance Opportunities
SMF offers evening recitals at the end of each day. These programs feature individual participants and SMF chamber ensembles. Performers audition daily to be included on the evening recital program. The Festival culminates in a closing concert, which features the SMF Concert Band and the SMF Choir along with SMF chamber ensembles and individual participants.
Academics
Music rudiment and theory class enrollment is determined at the beginning of the Festival. All participants will be asked to complete a placement test, which will determine their level of experience. Southeastern music majors teach classes and are supervised by a Southeastern faculty member.
Activities
Senior counselors will coordinate daily activities for students in the Band Room and help organize ÒStunt Night.Ó SMF offers participants the opportunity to work with each other in preparation for skits, which will be held during recital time on the penultimate evening. This evening is intended as an opportunity for light-hearted comedy and camaraderie.
Fees
Cost of the camp is $325.00 per student: ($75.00 with your form as a non-refundable* deposit, and the balance ($250.00) due at registration on July 3rd.
