Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many points must I earn per semester?

5 points first semester (1 of the 5 has to be a service point).
10 points each additional semester (3 of the 10 have to be service points).
5 points for graduating semester (1 of the 5 has to be a service point).

2. Will points carry over from semester to semester?

Yes.

3. What happens if I didn't make my points?

The first semester you do not make your points, you will be placed on probation and must make all points for that semester plus the points you missed. EXAMPLE: 8 points . . Fall Semester -2. For Spring Semester, you are on probation and must make a total of 12 points. If you fail to achieve your points after our probationary period, you will be dismissed.

4. What ways can I lose my membership?

A. Failure to pay the $10 local dues.
      B. Failure to meet point requirements.
      C. Failure to maintain academic level.

5. Do I have to attend all the meetings?

You do not have to attend any meetings, but we do encourage your attendance in order to be aware of what we're doing and involved in. You do get points for attending meetings.

6. What happens if I miss a meeting?

A. It is your responsibility to find out what was missed. Bi-weekly "What's Happenin" sheets are available in Room 110 of the Student Union and lists all upcoming activities.

      B. Newsletters are issued at the beginning of each semester with a basic calendar.

7. Can I get points for service I do outside of GBP?

Yes, as long as you do not get paid for it, it is not in conjunction with another group's work, or it is not church work. Only half of the points received for non-Gamma Beta Phi service counts toward a semester's total points.

8. What process do I follow to report service points from outside GBP?

We have "pink sheets" that are forms requiring some information about what you did and the signature of someone who supervised the work. The blank forms can be obtained in the offices of our co-advisors, and should be completed and returned to the appropriate Recording Secretary.

9. Is there any function of the chapter that I have to take part in?

A. Everyone must sell one book (10 tickets) of raffle tickets per semester. This is our major fund-raiser that affords us the funds to operate our service projects. Failure to sell a book will result in the loss of two (2) points.

      B. You must pay local dues of $10 per semester.

10. What happens if my grades drop?

To retain membership in Gamma Beta Phi, you must maintain yourself in the top 15% of your class. That varies from semester to semester but usually hovers around a 3.000 overall. If you should fall below this, you will be placed on probation for the following semester, but will be allowed to continue to participate fully in GBP. If, however, you should fail to bring up your grades following the probationary period, you will be suspended. That means your name will still be on file but your membership is frozen. You do not pay dues, participate in meetings, etc. If you fail to bring your grades up after that semester, you will be dismissed.

11. What should I do if I know I'm going to have a really difficult semester and may not have the time to devote to Gamma Beta Phi?

We have an inactive status. This means that your participation in Gamma Beta Phi is frozen for that semester. A member must write to the Executive Council requesting inactive status prior to the first meeting of the semester. You can only go inactive once and it cannot be during your graduation semester.

12. What happens to my membership if I have to stay out of school for one of more semesters?

You must notify the Executive Council that you are not in school and your membership will be frozen until you return. If you do not notify us, we will continue to credit your membership as active. You must also alert us when you return to school to regain full membership status.

13. What happens to my membership if I transfer to another university?

A. If that school has a Gamma Beta Phi chapter, a transfer form will be sent to National Headquarters, and you will be automatically transferred.

      B. If that school does not have a chapter, we will keep your name in our files, and at the beginning of the semester of your graduation, notify our co-advisors, and they will send a diploma seal to you.
