CONSTITUTION OF THE SLU HORTICULTURE CLUB Article I - Name This organization shall be known and designated and its business carried on under the name of the SLU Horticulture Club. Article II - Powers This organization shall have and possess all powers and privileges granted and conferred upon such organizations by virtue of the rules established by the Committee on Student Organizations and Activities of Southeastern Louisiana University. Article III - Objectives and Purposes The objectives and purposes of this organization are to create more interest in horticulture as a profession as well as a way of life among the students and faculty of SLU as well as throughout the state of Louisiana. To promote interest and appreciation of horticulture activities and practices. In general to prepare SLU graduates in horticulture to accept roles as leaders in their field and to promote in its members KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, and LEADERSHIP. Article IV - Membership Section 1. Any regularly enrolled student of SLU who is interested in and endorses the objectives of this organization and pays the membership fee may become a member. Section 2. There shall be two classes of members. A. Active members 1. Full or part time students enrolled in a curriculum leading to a degree in the university. 2. Registered for or taking 3 or more hours of horticulture classes at a 200 or above level. 3. Students must attend 3 out of 4 club meetings per semester. 4. Must donate 1 hour per month or a total of 4 hours per semester. 5. Must be an active member for at least 2 semesters prior to trip date. 6. Members work at least 2/3 of work projects in any one semester (ex. Rock-N-Roar, Plant Sales). For a member’s vote to be counted, he/she must attend the meeting at which the resolution is being voted. It will be announced two meetings prior to the vote. No absentee votes will be accepted. A 2/3 majority is acceptable to pass a resolution. B. Honorary Members - Individuals who this organization sees fit to select to the position upon their merit of having distinguished themselves in furthering the objectives of this organization. They shall be voted on by the entire general body. Honorary members will be entitled to all privileges of Active membership in accordance with University regulations, except they will not be allowed the right to hold an office. Section 3. Membership dues shall be payable by fall semester and upon payment of such dues, the organization shall issue membership certificates. Article V - Officers of SLU Horticulture Club Section 1. The officers of the organization shall be a president, vice-president, and a secretary/treasurer. Section 2. To be eligible for these offices a member must be an active participant for one semester prior to nomination or election. The President and Vice-President must be full-time students enrolled in the Department of Biology/Horticulture. Section 3. The officers shall be nominated and elected from the floor at the first business meeting of the fall semester and serve through the following spring and summer semesters. Section 4. Individuals may be re-elected to an office or elected to any other office if active membership sees fit. Article VI - Duties of the Officers Section 1. Duties of the President. The president shall (1) preside over all meetings of the Club (2) call special meetings, (3) perform all acts and duties usually performed by an executive and presiding officer, and (4) sign all membership certificates and such other papers of the club as directed by the general rules and regulations of the University. Section 2. Duties of the Vice-President. In the absence or disability of the President, the Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President. Section 3. Duties of the Secretary/Treasurer. The Secretary/Treasurer shall (1) keep a complete record of all meetings of the club, (2) shall have general charge and supervision of the books and records of the club, (3) keep complete membership records, (4) collect dues and assessments, (5) assist in preparing an annual budget of estimated receipts and expenditures, and (6) the Secretary/Treasurer shall turn over all books and other property belonging to the club to the successor. Article VII - Meetings Section 1. Regular meetings for this organization shall be held at least monthly with special meetings called as need arises. Notification for special meetings shall be at least three days prior to the meeting. Section 2. All meetings shall be conducted in accordance with accepted parliamentary procedure as outlined in Robert’s Rules of Order. Article VIII - Voting Matters coming before this organization shall be decided on by a majority of the active voting members present at each club meeting. Article IX - Faculty Advisor(s) Section1. This organization shall have a faculty advisor who teaches horticulture courses under the Department of Biological Sciences. Section 2. The duties of this faculty advisor shall be to counsel and assist the members, officers, and committees of this organization. Article X - Right to Amend, Alter, or Repeal This Association reserves the right and privileges to amend, alter, or repeal any provision contained in this constitution by the affirmative vote of a two-thirds (2/3) majority of active members present at a special meeting specifically called and convened for that purpose. Notice of which special meetings shall be provided three (3) days preceding the date on which such meeting is to be held. |
