Call for Papers and Panels

September 26, 2009

Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Natchitoches, LA

The conference theme for 2009 is “Audiences Involved in Change”.  In 2009 LCA will host its eleventh annual conference.  LCA seeks a collection of communication studies discussions that define the audiences to whom change has been directed in the closing year of the first decade of the Twenty-First century and/or considering what way can we shape change in the next decade.  How do the members and friends of LCA interpret the change experienced to date?   What change will promote our discipline to a broader range of audiences.  Accordingly, this year’s conference theme seeks research that promotes the relevance of the communication field to the larger communities that encompass it: the state, the higher education milieu, and the world of communication practitioners.  The Vice President is especially interested in papers and panels that involve the connections between K-12 faculty and students with university Service-Learning initiatives.

Submitters are encouraged to embrace the conference theme expressly, but presentations on all communication matters are welcome.

Submissions were due June 30, 2009, but we have extended the Call to August 15, 2009.

Directions for Submitting:

Authors may submit completed papers, panel proposals, Great Ideas For Teaching Speech (G.I.F.T.S.) or, works-in-progress.  All submissions should be in MS Word format or some format compatible with Word and emailed to foster@nsula.edu by June 30, 2009.

To Submit a Completed Paper

Completed papers are eligible for Top Paper Awards in the following categories: Top Professional Paper, Top Graduate Student Paper, and Top Undergraduate Paper.

Papers should not exceed 25 pages of double-spaced text (approximately 6000 words).  No author-identifying information should be included in the text of the paper.  A separate file should contain a title page listing each author and contact information (names, mailing addresses, institutional affiliations, telephone numbers, and email addresses).  Graduate and Undergraduate papers must be clearly identified with GRADUATE or UNDERGRADUATE in the header of the paper and in the author information on the title page.

To Submit Works-in-Progress

The W-I-P format is designed to facilitate scholar-to-scholar discussions of research in its nascent stages.  Get feedback on theoretical, methodological, and/or analytic aspects of your current project in time to develop and refine your work for SSCA, NCA, or journal submission.  Presenters on WIP panels will engage in a series of ten minute one-on-one dialogs where they overview their project to another communication scholar and solicit feedback.

To be considered for inclusion in a works-in-progress session, authors should submit a 1-page abstract of the project.   A separate file should contain a title page listing the author and contact information (name, mailing address, institutional affiliation, telephone number, and email address).

To Submit G.I.F.T.S.

G.I.F.T.S. sessions offer dynamic interaction between small groups of communication professors focused on instructional techniques.  Presenters are stationed at a numbered table with seats for several colleagues.  Attendees take up their seats at the table of their choosing and hear about an innovative teaching strategy that has worked successfully in a communication classroom.  After 10-minutes, attendees leave the table with directions and handouts for that assignment and find another table of interest to receive more G.I.F.T.S.

To submit your teaching technique for consideration, please submit a 1-page description of the activity including: 1) Goals/Learning Objectives, 2) Rationale, 3) Directions, and 4) Typical results.  Be sure to include contact information (mail, phone, email) with your submission.

To Submit Panel Proposals

Panels and roundtables that promote cross-institutional dialog on matters of significance to the Louisiana higher education communication community are of particular interest.  Panel proposals should include

    1. Panel Title,
    2. List of panelists with institutional affiliations,
    3. Contact information for each panelist (mail, phone, email), and
    4. 1-page description and rationale for the panel or roundtable discussion.

We are also looking for peer reviewers for papers submitted.  Please let us know if you are willing to help with this essential part of rewarding our scholar’s efforts for tenure and promotion.
