What dances will I learn?
The Swing Dance Club offers instruction in dances such as: east coast swing, cha-cha, salsa, merengue, rumba, foxtrot, waltz, tango, and hustle.
What should I wear?
We have no special dress code for practicing in. You should wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Wearing deodorant is definitely a good idea.
Do I need special dancing shoes?
Dress shoes with leather soles or barefoot works well. Tennis shoes or other shoes that have rubber soles, that grip the floor, are not safe for your ankles and knees.
How much will it cost me?
Membership is only $25 for first semester members and $20 for each consecutive semester; this covers the costs of instruction, room fee, and your semester dance ticket. This is the best deal around town.
Can beginners start at any time?
We encourage you to join us as often as you like. We teach different dances over the whole semester, so you are able to join at any time.
Do I need a partner?
A partner helps, but it’s not required. We pair up anyone who doesn’t have a partner during class. You could have a different partner every week.
Do I, or my partner need to be a student to take your dance lessons?
You do not need to be a Southeastern student to become a member. Our classes are offered to everyone whether you are a student or a non-student. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. However, you must be affiliated with a member of Southeastern and the club.
Are there any other dance opportunities around the area?
There are countless dances on the Southshore as well as dances in Mandeville and Baton Rouge, See the link page for some of these opportunities. We go on field trips to different dances around town, so if you do not have transportation, that is not a problem. Most of the time we meet and leave from Hammond, but we have members that come from many different areas. So do not worry, you will have a ride.
